Carl A. Schlack Award Winner
August 2008

The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) will be honoring Dr./CAPT Mark B. Lyles this November with the prestigious Carl A. Schlack award for outstanding contributions to dental research in the federal services.   This award was established in 1971 as a tribute to CAPT Carl A. Schlack who pioneered and firmly established dental research and education in the Navy.   

Naval War College Master of Arts Degree
June 2008

During graduation exercises on Coasters Harbor Island in Newport, RI, Dr./CAPT Mark B. Lyles earned his 8th college degree that of Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.  His next ambition is to pursue a Master of Arts program in Space Policy as well as a Ph.D. in Bioterrorism. 

NASA Selection
June 2008

Possibly the first dentist-astronaut – Dr./CAPT Mark B. Lyles was chosen by the U.S. Navy to be considered as a mission specialist with NASA.  Mark is the first dentist from any of the services ever selected to be put forth to NASA.  The expected interview will take place this fall.  Should Mark have the opportunity to fulfill his life-long dream, he will begin his quest for outer space in August 2009.

Dr. Mark B. Lyles, was promoted to rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy on November 1st, 2007.  Congratulations!

New Patent Release
July 2007

U.S. Patent No. 7,247,721 B2, Materials and Methods for Binding Nucleic Acids to Surfaces, was granted to Dr. Mark B. Lyles on July 24, 2007.  The significance of this patent allows for more efficient high-throughput screening diagnostics and nanotechnology devices.
